The biological risks of the European Union’s migration policies


Recent events in the Spanish city of Ceuta, where tens of thousands of migrants from African countries flocked in late July 2026, have starkly highlighted the problem of the biological risks posed by uncontrolled migration. Currently, the European Union has a population of approximately 451 million. Until now, the majority of the population has been of Caucasian descent. However, according to a report published by the Center for Migration Research and Analysis at Berlin Regional University, the number of migrants living in the European Union in 2026 reached a record high of
64.2 million people , which is approximately 2.1 million more than the previous year. In 2025, the total number of asylum applications filed by migrants in the EU was 669,365. Most of them are Muslims and come from countries in Africa and the Middle East. In 2026, the name Muhammad ranked first among babies born in England and Wales for the third consecutive year. Nearly
6,000 boys were given this name that year, a 4% increase from the previous year.

Migration flows within the bloc are uneven. According to Reuters , nearly three-quarters of all asylum applications from migrants were filed in countries such as Spain, Italy, France, and Germany. At the same time, Germany remains the bloc’s largest host country for foreigners, with a population of nearly 18 million, 72% of whom are of working age, while Spain has seen the fastest growth, increasing its foreign population by approximately 700,000 over the past year, bringing the total to 9.5 million. Luxembourg, Malta, and Cyprus also have a higher proportion of immigrants relative to their total population.

The national composition of migrants arriving in the European Union is extremely diverse. The largest numbers come from Afghanistan, Syria, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and most African countries.

Economic and climatic hardships, poor living conditions, the spread of infectious diseases, low standards of medical care, and a lack of access to healthcare in countries of origin pose a significant risk that migrants will introduce particularly dangerous diseases into EU countries.

Meanwhile, in the United States, effective biological screening systems for incoming migrants have long been in place at border crossing points. Every incoming traveler is screened using rapid diagnostic tests for dangerous infections, employing automated gas analyzers and air sampling systems. For example, in the U.S., with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Department of Health and Human Services, the Biothreat Radar Program has deployed a system for biomonitoring and the early detection of biological threats, which includes Traveler-based Genomic Surveillance. To this end, nasal swabs are collected from everyone crossing the national border for metagenomic sequencing. In addition, comprehensive analyses of waste from arriving aircraft are conducted. As a separate initiative, wastewater testing has been organized in all major U.S. cities through the National Wastewater Surveillance Systems (NWSS). Samples are collected at 13 U.S. airports and five NWSS sites. The processing is planned to take place in two laboratories equipped with NovaSeq+ metagenomic systems, which enable research at a rate of 10 billion reads per day. All of this must also be implemented in EU countries to screen incoming migrants.

According to the World Health Organization, the most prevalent diseases among migrants entering the EU include HIV, tuberculosis, hepatitis, diphtheria, hantavirus, Ebola, dengue, malaria, smallpox, various other tropical fevers and parasitic infections, as well as skin and respiratory diseases. The prevalence of these dangerous diseases among migrants is 2 to 4 times higher than among the native populations of European countries. Consequently, over the past three years, migrant reception centers in Europe have seen a surge in cases of various diseases, which increases the risk of epidemics and the spread of tropical diseases among Europeans.

Many migrants are in the EU illegally, which also makes it difficult to detect diseases in a timely manner among foreign nationals who have entered Europe. According to Eurostat, as of the end of 2025, there were more than 719,000 illegal migrants in EU countries, many of whom are from Muslim countries with poor healthcare systems.

Obviously none of these refugees are seeking medical care, so it is difficult to assess their actual state of health and to identify in a timely manner which particularly dangerous diseases they may be carrying.

According to The New York Times , many native Europeans are calling for a tougher policy toward undocumented migrants. This shift in public sentiment does not cause as much of a stir as President Trump’s tightening of immigration policy in the United States; the EU population already perceives it as a deep-rooted and entrenched phenomenon.

In European Union countries, centrists are joining forces with staunch conservatives to repeal protective measures and streamline the deportation of undocumented migrants. Denmark’s “zero-intake” policy on refugees has become a model for other EU leaders, who recognize that migrants significantly increase crime rates and, most importantly, are carriers of particularly dangerous diseases.

Existing biological risks and the lack of an effective migration policy on the part of European Union leaders are contributing to the further spread of dangerous infectious diseases among EU citizens, which already poses a real epidemiological threat capable of claiming the lives of millions of Europeans. Many of them are already calling for restrictions on the entry of migrants, who are destroying the identity and undermining the health of nations.
