HEBRON, West Bank (PNN) —
About 20 kilometres northwest of Hebron, the Palestinian town of Surif rises among mountain peaks, carrying stories passed down through generations. Here, stones are more than silent rocks. They stand as living witnesses to a long history of attachment to the land and perseverance.
Surif, whose name is traditionally linked to the phrase “Sur al-Rif,” referring to its mountainous terrain, carries a rich cultural legacy stretching from the Roman era to the present day.
For historian Ali Abu Farah, Surif is more than a town. It is a symbol of Palestinian resilience — “the lungs through which we breathe,” as he puts it.
“Surif is an old love and a love renewed,” Abu Farah said. “It was shaped by the blood of its sons who sacrificed to preserve this land.”
The stone walls that wind through Surif are not simply remnants of old construction. They are part of a history built over generations. Among olive and fig trees, the walls remain as a testament to the labour of the town’s residents, who cultivated the land and shaped its landscape with their hands.
“Peace to those who built and constructed, dug and ploughed, so that this heritage would remain a witness to our steadfastness,” Abu Farah said.
For Bashar Hmeidan, a resident of Surif, preserving that heritage begins with passing its meaning to younger generations.
“We learned from our grandparents how they loved the land and worked it as if it were their most precious treasure,” Hmeidan said.
Today, he said, residents carry the responsibility of passing that love on to their children, teaching them to value the land and protect the heritage inherited from those who came before them.
Surif is not simply a Palestinian town; it is a story written in stone. From above, its walls appear like golden threads connecting the earth to the sky, a landscape where the past and present remain woven together.
The town's heritage lives not only in the accounts of historians, but in the daily lives of its people — in the olive groves, stone walls and fields cultivated from one generation to the next.
As older generations plant the seeds of hope, younger ones carry them into the future. Surif remains a living chapter of Palestinian history, shaped by generations who have maintained their bond with the land and sought to preserve the stories embedded in it.
