This coming Saturday 5 th September will see large marches for Palestine take place across Ireland to demand the cancellation of the Ireland v Israel football matches in the Nations League.
Under the slogan of ‘ Stop the Games – Not Here, Not Anywhere! ’ the marches will take to the streets in the four corners of Ireland :
Dublin – 1pm, Stop the Games: March to the Department of Sport , Gather Barnardo Square, Dame St
Belfast – 1pm, Stop the Game , Writer’s Square
Cork – 1pm, Stop the Games march , Grand Parade
Derry – 3pm, Stop the Game Rally and Stall, Waterloo Place
Ennis – 11am, Don’t Play Ball with Genocide , O’Connell Square
Monaghan – 11am, Demonstration, Church Square
Waterford – 12pm, Stop the Game March, The Bullpost, Ballybricken
The day of action was called by the Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) as part of the ‘ Stop the Games – FAI Red Card Genocidal Israel ’ campaign.
Speaking ahead of the Day of Action, IPSC Chairperson Zoë Lawlor said: “We are approaching the third anniversary of the start of Israel’s genocide, and the FAI and Irish Government are seemingly happy to allow our national men’s football team to be deployed to help Apartheid Israel sportswash its crimes against humanity.
“Using sport to normalise war crimes is disgusting, but it’s even more sickening when those crimes include a campaign of sporticide against more than 1,000 Palestinian athletes and sports officials, including the mass murder of more than 500 footballers, one fifth of them children!
“It should be unconscionable to take part in these games as if Israel is just some normal state – it is not. Indeed, Israel’s pariah status is widely recognised by the Irish public, by Irish football fans, and by Irish professional players. In ploughing ahead, the FAI and the Government are placing players, staff and workers in a position no one should ever find themselves.
“Once again ‘Official Ireland’ is out of step with the views of the people and thinks we can easily be ignored. But the very fact that the games will be played outside Ireland, and behind closed doors with no Irish fans allowed, shows that they know well that if they are going to go ahead with this exercise in sportswashing, they have to do it far from the Irish public who want an end to business as usual with the genocidal apartheid regime!
“We call on the FAI to STOP THE GAMES – it’s not too late. We call on the government to act to stop the games if the FAI continues to refuse! And finally, we also call on RTÉ to follow their own Eurovision example, and refuse to screen these exercises in genocide-washing!”
