Palestine News Network (PNN), as part of its cooperation with the Palestine Press Workshop, has launched a new television programme, “PNN Accountability,” focusing on the everyday concerns and needs of Palestinian citizens.
The programme examines issues affecting people's daily lives through field reports that document citizens' experiences and concerns. The cases are then followed up with relevant governmental and civil society institutions, while specialists and experts are invited to discuss the issues raised and provide context and possible solutions.
The first episode, presented by PNN journalist Fayrouz Odeh, addressed several issues of public importance, including emergency medical services.
The programme documented an initiative by the Beit Sahour Municipality to purchase an ambulance to transport patients and injured people in Beit Sahour and nearby eastern villages. The episode hosted Beit Sahour Mayor Laith Qumsieh, who discussed the initiative and its importance in providing residents with access to emergency transportation.
Qumsieh stressed that the initiative goes beyond purchasing an ambulance. Operating the vehicle requires fuel, medical equipment, staffing, follow-up and regular maintenance.
He said he hoped government institutions, particularly the Ministry of Health, would provide the remaining resources needed to operate the ambulance effectively. He also stressed that the primary responsibility for providing ambulances lies with the Ministry of Health and government hospitals.
The second issue examined in the first episode was the shortage of water affecting Palestinian villages, refugee camps and cities.
The programme focused on the town of Idhna, south of Hebron, as a case study of the difficulties faced by residents. The report examined both restrictions on Palestinian access to water resources and problems related to water distribution.
Idhna Mayor Rizq Atteya was interviewed about the causes of the water shortage, including what he described as Israeli control over and appropriation of Palestinian water resources, as well as shortcomings in water distribution.
Atteya also discussed efforts by the municipality, in coordination with relevant institutions, to improve water supplies and ensure that water reaches residents.
Through “PNN Accountability,” PNN aims to bring citizens' concerns into the public spotlight, document problems through field reporting and follow up with the institutions responsible for addressing them.
