The Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) Heads of State have mandated President Yoweri Museveni to engage with states in the region, AU members and the international community for troop deployment in Somalia.
They also asked Museveni to engage the countries for financial and technical support for the deployment of the peace support mission.
They called on African Union (AU) members to give them the mandate for the deployment of the peace mission to Somalia.
According to a statement issued by State House yesterday, the heads of state also deliberated on the situation in Darfur and relations between DRC and Rwanda.
It said in his address, Museveni called for a critical look into cases of hunger and food insecurity in Africa, with a view to addressing them in a sustainable manner.
“Africa has no excuse not to produce enough food for her people. It is pitiable when we have to import food from people who grow their crops in green houses, when we have been so well endowed by nature.
“It is imperative that we critically look into the causes of hunger and food insecurity in Africa, with a view to addressing them sustainably,” he said in his address to the AU summit in Abuja, Nigeria.
