Iran strikes Gulf petrochemical and desalination facilities

Iran launched a series of coordinated strikes targeting key infrastructure facilities across the Gulf on Saturday evening and into Sunday morning, hitting sites in Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain . The attacks sparked multiple fires and forced the suspension of several major operations as authorities worked to determine the full extent of the damage.

Government officials in Kuwait confirmed early Sunday that two power and desalination plants were struck, leading to the shutdown of two power generation units.

No details were provided on which of the country’s 80 desalination facilities were hit, but the incident raised alarm as around 90 percent of Kuwait’s drinking water is produced at such plants.

Meanwhile, the Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC) reported a fire at its Shuwaikh oil complex, which houses both the Ministry of Oil and the company’s headquarters, following a drone strike. The blaze was contained with no injuries reported.

A separate drone attack targeted the Ministry of Finance complex in Kuwait City, inflicting significant structural damage but causing no casualties. Authorities instructed ministry employees to evacuate and continue work remotely until further notice.

In the United Arab Emirates , strikes targeted the Barouge petrochemical plant in Abu Dhabi, one of the region’s largest industrial facilities.

The attack prompted a temporary suspension of operations while emergency teams assessed damage and controlled fires reportedly caused by falling debris after UAE air defences intercepted multiple incoming missiles and drones. The Abu Dhabi Media Office confirmed that no casualties had been recorded.

In Bahrain, the Interior Ministry said civil defence teams were battling a fire at an oil storage tank belonging to Bapco Energies, the country’s national oil company, after the facility was struck by Iranian projectiles.

Officials said there were no injuries but added that the scale of the material damage was still under review.

Later on Sunday, Bahrain’s Al-Khaleej Petrochemical Industries Company confirmed that several of its operational units were also targeted overnight. The company said fires had been extinguished and the situation was under control by morning, with no casualties reported.

Regional security sources said the overnight attacks also included attempted strikes on Saudi Arabia. The kingdom’s Defence Ministry reported intercepting and destroying at least one projectile late Saturday night before it reached its target.
