A video clip documented the moment Israeli occupation soldiers assaulted a Palestinian child with Down Syndrome in Shuafat refugee camp northeast of Jerusalem, and used him as a human shield during a military incursion, in a scene that sparked widespread shock, and shed light once again on repeated violations against civilians, including children and people with special needs.

The video shows the child Mahdi Abu Taleb meeting his brother Mohammad after returning from school, before the soldiers intervened violently, ignoring the cries of Mohammad who tried to alert them that his brother is a “special case” and suffers from Down Syndrome. Despite that, one of the soldiers assaulted Mohammad by hitting him with his weapon, which led to a head injury, before the child was abducted again and dragged on the ground. #شاهد | لحظة اعتقال الطفل مهدي أبو طالب والاعتداء على شقيقه محمد عصر اليوم في مخيم شعفاط شمال شرق القدس المحتلة.. pic.twitter.com/ZpmpKOTt6f — المركز الفلسطيني للإعلام (@PalinfoAr) April 30, 2026 According to the family’s account, the occupation soldiers placed the child inside a military vehicle for several minutes, before releasing him, while an officer later claimed that he was not aware of his health condition.

Mohammad Abu Taleb said that the incident occurred during a sudden incursion into the camp, which is something that recurs almost daily, noting that the soldiers chased his brother despite his continuous attempts to protect him. He added that what happened left deep psychological effects on Mahdi, who has become afraid to leave the house, and prefers to stay inside, and his desire to go to school has decreased.

He pointed out that the family noticed sharp behavioral changes in the child, represented by sleep disturbances and involuntary urination, along with a state of permanent fear, confirming that Mahdi’s screams during the assault still haunt him, especially when he was calling him asking for help.

Mohammad underlined that he was unable to save his brother at those moments, as he was surrounded by seven soldiers pointing their weapons at him, at a time when he was bleeding and feeling severe dizziness as a result of the injury he sustained. He suggested that the incident would pass without accountability, as has happened in similar incidents, despite its seriousness, especially since it targeted a child with special needs. داهم الجنود الإسرائيليون مخيم شعفاط للاجئين شمال القدس المحتلة، حيث طاردوا وجرّوا طفلاً فلسطينياً من ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة."

Although the majority of its residents hold Jerusalem identity cards, the occupation separated it from its surroundings with a separation wall and a military checkpoint.

The residents of the camp suffer from strict restrictions on movement, as the northeastern entrance is the only outlet for the residents of the nearby town of Anata, which forms a geographical extension of it. In June 2025, the occupation tightened its measures by closing the area via an iron gate, making the movement of residents subject to volatile military procedures.
