April 17 is not just a date on the Palestinian calendar, but a station where the stories of prisoners behind bars are concentrated, where time turns into a daily burden, and life becomes a series of accumulated violations.
However, this anniversary this year comes weighted with an exceptional context, as data indicates a stage that is the harshest in decades, with an unprecedented escalation in the number of detainees, and a sharp deterioration in their detention conditions.
Unprecedented inflation in the number of detainees
Israeli prisons are witnessing a notable increase in the number of Palestinian prisoners, as the total number has exceeded 9,600 prisoners, in an indicator reflecting a shift in the arrest policy toward quantitative expansion and wide targeting.
Administrative detainees emerge as the title of this stage, as they constitute a rising segment exceeding 3,600 detainees, held without indictments or trials, in light of the intensive use of this procedure.
The body under siege: Illness as an extension of punishment
Inside the cells, pain is not limited to shackles, but extends to the exhausted body. About nine prisoners suffer from diseases of varying severity, including chronic and dangerous cases, in light of a health environment described as repellent to life.
Human rights testimonies indicate that medical care has turned from a right into a pressure tool, where prisoners are deprived of adequate treatment, and medical interventions are postponed, making illness a parallel path to punishment.
Escalation of deaths
Figures show an upward curve in the number of martyrs of the prisoner movement, who totaled 326 since 1967, with a noticeable increase in death cases since late 2023, as their number reached about 100, of whom 89 their identities were identified, including 53 from the Gaza Strip.
The danger does not stop at the announced numbers, as estimates indicate the existence of undocumented cases, especially among Gaza detainees, who face detention conditions isolated from any oversight.
Gaza: A closed file outside accountability
The file of the Gaza Strip detainees seems the most complex, as it is shrouded in broad ambiguity. Information about their numbers or places of detention is almost non-existent, in light of their complete disconnection from the outside world.
Testimonies leaked from some detention centers reflect a harsh image, speaking of violent practices and exceptional detention conditions, which puts these detainees in the circle of “enforced disappearance” outside any clear legal framework.
Deterrence system inside prisons
In parallel with that, punitive measures inside prisons escalated, through reducing visits, tightening daily restrictions, and carrying out frequent raids on sections.
Reports indicate that these measures are no longer exceptional, but have become part of a fixed policy aimed at reshaping the prison environment in a way that enhances full control over the lives of prisoners.
Violations affecting human dignity
Within this context, patterns of violations targeting the human dimension of prisoners emerged, including degrading practices during searches and daily treatment.
Cross-referenced testimonies confirm that these methods are used as a means to psychologically subdue prisoners, through affecting their dignity, in light of the absence of actual accountability.
A legislative path deepening the crisis
On the legal level, the recent period witnessed moves to tighten laws related to prisoners, reflecting a trend toward bestowing a legal character on punitive measures.
Observers see that these legislations open the door to more extremism, and redefine the relationship with prisoners within a purely security framework, far from international human rights standards.
Calls for accountability in the face of international silence
In contrast, calls from human rights institutions are mounting to open international investigations into violations inside prisons, amid demands to activate international accountability mechanisms.
These calls stress the need to provide urgent protection for prisoners, especially the most vulnerable groups, in light of the rapid deterioration in their conditions.
A memory that does not break
Despite all of the above, Prisoners’ Day remains a space to reclaim the Palestinian story from inside the prison, where prisoners turn into a symbol of steadfastness that transcends walls.
In light of a reality that is becoming more complex, their cause remains present as an integral part of the national scene, and an open title for the battle of freedom and dignity.
