Hamas says Israel ‘prolonging’ war through daily violations

Hamas issued a statement on Friday condemning Israel for "prolonging the war of extermination" through daily violations of the truce, while the Israeli army carried out violent raids across the occupied West Bank. Hamas said Israel has continued to launch attacks on Palestinians over the past 200 days, adding that this comes despite their commitment to the ceasefire.

The movement reaffirmed in the statement that Palestinian factions had "demonstrated full commitment to all the terms of the truce agreement, including the captive handover process, which was done according to the timelines set, despite the difficulties caused by the large-scale destruction from the Israeli onslaught".

"However, the occupation government has violated its commitments and continued its aggression under the guise of the agreement," the statement continues.

The comments come as Israel has killed over 824 Palestinians and wounded at least 2,300 others since the ceasefire came into effect on 10 October.

As well as failing to abide by its humanitarian aid obligations outlined in the truce, Israel targets Palestinians who near the so-called Yellow Line demarcation, which covers around 53 percent of Gaza.

Hamas said that all these violations "represent clear evidence of the criminal government of Netanyahu’s blatant disregard for the mediators’ efforts, and its attempts to sabotage the agreement".

Gaza’s government media office said this week that Israel has committed at least 377 violations of the truce in April alone, resulting in 111 Palestinians being killed and 376 wounded.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday also called for the immediate entry of medicine and essential supplies into Gaza, as the health sector has reached breaking point after over two years of war.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces violently raided several parts of the occupied West Bank on Friday evening, sparking clashes with young Palestinians and causing businesses to shutter.

Israeli forces raided several towns southeast of Bethlehem, using tear gas and sound grenades on residents.

A similar raid was carried out in a neighbourhood in the city of Jenin and a town northeast of Ramallah.

In towns north of Hebron, Israeli forces restricted the movement of Palestinians amid the raid and stormed homes.

There has been a sharp uptick in Israeli raids in the West Bank since the start of the war on Gaza in October 2023.

Last month, the Palestinian Prisoners’ Society (PPS) said that over 23,000 Palestinians have been detained by Israeli forces since 2023.

According to the PPS, around 700 women from Gaza, the West Bank and Israel are held behind bars, while 1,800 children are also detained.

The detentions often come amid violent raids, beatings, intimidation and harassment of individuals and their family members.

In many cases, the PPS says, Israeli forces will ransack the homes of Palestinians, vandalise property and seize money and gold jewellery.
