A Hamas-affiliated security body in Gaza executed an alleged collaborator with Israel this week, accusing him of helping the Israeli military assassinate the commander of the group's armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, Izz al-Din al-Haddad .
The Hamas-affiliated Resistance Security apparatus accused the man of working with Israeli intelligence and facilitating a series of Israeli attacks during the war in Gaza, including the strike that killed al-Haddad.
Al-Haddad, who was also known as Abu Suhaib and headed the Qassam Brigades' military staff, was killed alongside his wife and daughter in an Israeli air strike on an apartment in central Gaza City on 15 May.
While Hamas did not formally claim responsibility for the execution, attributing it instead to the Resistance Security apparatus, several local indicators suggested the sentence was carried out by members of the Qassam Brigades.
The alleged collaborator's body was reportedly left outside Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza City's Tel al-Hawa neighbourhood after the execution.
In a statement, the Hamas -affiliated Resistance Security apparatus said the execution was carried out "after all revolutionary procedures had been exhausted" against the alleged collaborator, identified only by the initials "M.M.".
The group alleged that he had links with "the intelligence services of the Zionist occupation" and was responsible for "several massacres that led to the martyrdom of many of our steadfast people during the war of genocide on the Gaza Strip".
It further alleged that he had facilitated "a number of assassination operations against leaders of the resistance factions, the latest being the assassination of the martyred commander Izz al-Din al-Haddad, chief of staff of the Qassam Brigades".
Resistance Security warned that "this is the fate of collaborators who cooperate with the occupation and align themselves with its schemes aimed at undermining the steadfastness and unity of our people".
The statement also called on "everyone who has lost their way and tied their fate to the occupation to return to the national fold before it is too late and surrender themselves to the Resistance Security services".
It added that "these collaborators, who have abandoned the national ranks, represent only themselves" and had violated "the customs and traditions of Palestinian families and clans, which have played a national role in preserving internal unity and confronting the occupation's plans and its collaborators".
Israel has long relied on networks of Palestinian informants to gather intelligence in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories, while Palestinian armed groups have historically targeted those accused of collaborating with Israeli security services.
The allegations made by the Hamas-affiliated Resistance Security apparatus could not be independently verified, and Israel has not commented on the claims surrounding al-Haddad's assassination.
