Will Iran attack Israel over its escalating war in Lebanon?

Iranian military and political officials issued a series of warnings to Israel and the United States on Monday, threatening to open "new fronts" and hinting at possible military action if Israel continues expanding its devastating attacks in Lebanon .

Iran's Revolutionary Guards threatened to open "new fronts" while an army spokesperson warned that Tehran "cannot tolerate" Israel's continued attacks on Lebanon.

Anger has grown among conservative circles and supporters of Iran's Revolutionary Guards over the lack of response to Israel's repeated violations of the ceasefire in Lebanon.

Israel has continued to bomb the country on a daily basis since the 16 April ceasefire with Hezbollah and further intensified the conflict over the weekend with a new ground offensive in the south. On Monday, it ordered residents of Beirut's southern suburbs to flee the area ahead of renewed airstrikes.

The escalation is threatening to torpedo efforts to end the regional war, with Iran's Tasnim news agency reporting on Monday that Tehran has suspended indirect negotiations with the US due to Israel's attack on Lebanon.

In a warning to Israeli leaders on Monday, Iranian Armed Forces spokesperson Abolfazl Shekarchi said that "the continuation of the brutal crimes in Lebanon is something the Iranian Armed Forces cannot tolerate," according to Tasnim .

He added that any violation of the ceasefire on one front constitutes a violation on all fronts, holding the US and Israel responsible for the consequences of any breach of the ceasefire.

"Iran considers crossing the red lines in Lebanon and Gaza to mean direct war," state media quoted the Revolutionary Guards' intelligence organisation as saying.

"In return, it is determined to carry out defensive operations by taking meaningful actions and opening new fronts, in addition to preserving the Strait of Hormuz equation".

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran's parliament speaker and chief negotiator, accused the US of breaching the ceasefire by allowing Israel to escalate its war against Hezbollah.

"The naval blockade and escalation of war crimes in Lebanon by the genocidal Zionist regime are clear evidence of US noncompliance with the ceasefire," he wrote in a post on X.

"Every choice has a price, and the bill comes due. It will all fall into place."

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reiterated that the 8 April ceasefire applied across the region and warned that a "violation on one front is a violation of the ceasefire on all fronts".

"The US and Israel are responsible for the consequences of any violation," he wrote on X.

At his weekly press conference, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said Monday that Israel is seeking to escalate tensions in a bid to shut down a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.

He said that Iran is closely monitoring the situation in Lebanon and will not hesitate to take any steps it considers necessary to defend its national security.

The warnings came as Iran and the US exchanged the heaviest strikes since the ceasefire came into effect.

The US said on Monday that it had hit radar and drone sites while Iran targeted a US military base in Kuwait. Iranian air defences shot down an American drone over the weekend.
