The French referee of the controversial World Cup last-16 clash between Egypt and Argentina will not be involved in any of the tournament's remaining fixtures.
François Letexier led last week's game, which saw the South American side snatch a 3-2 victory after scoring three goals in the dying minutes.
The game was marred by controversial decisions which provoked fury among the Pharaohs, who have demanded his expulsion from the competition, alleging he helped to rig proceedings in Argentina's favour.
However, Letexier's absence from the competition's latter stages is not because of the controversy but because of FIFA rules designed to prevent conflicts of interest.
FIFA policy forbids officials from any country that makes it to the semi-finals from participating in the rest of the tournament.
This means that referees from Argentina, England and Spain will also play no part in the semi-finals, the third-place playoff or the final.
But the match has thrown Lexetier's participation in future World Cup competitions into doubt, with the Egyptian Football Association demanding FIFA open an investigation into his conduct and ban his involvement in future games.
Its complaint alleges officials made "serious refereeing mistakes”, applied "double standards”, and "failed to make appropriate use of VAR." It also accuses them of making "blatant errors" and "discriminating against the Egyptian national team”.
Claims that Argentina received preferential treatment quickly went viral online, with fans across the world pointing out key decisions in the game that went against Egypt.
Egypt looked to have taken a 2-0 lead in the 58th minute with a sensational team goal, only for it to be ruled out by VAR for a soft foul on Argentinian defender Lisandro Martinez at the other end of the pitch.
Emotions on the Egyptian bench boiled over at the end of the game when VAR refused to check for a potential foul against Mohammed Salah in the penalty area, less than a minute before Enzo Fernandez scored the winning goal.
Letexier also handed out a string of yellow cards to Egyptian players for minor fouls. Argentina, despite recording more fouls, ended the game cardless.
Head coach Hossam Hassan delivered a scathing post-match press conference, describing Egypt's exit as "unfair and unjust" and accusing FIFA of wanting to keep the reigning champions in the competition.
Striker Mostafa Ziko, who twice found the back of the net during the game, accused the World Cup of being "fixed" and "directed to Argentina".
Letexier officiated three matches during the tournament, also heading up the Côte d'Ivoire vs Ecuador and Cape Verde v Saudi Arabia group-stage games.
