Son of far-right MP Lowe 'marries Libyan woman at halal wedding'

The son of British right-wing politician Rupert Lowe has reportedly married a Muslim woman of Libyan descent, raising eyebrows given the Restore Britain founder’s frequent anti-Muslim and anti-immigration pronouncements.

Reports in legacy and social media have suggested that the wedding of Angus Lowe to Yasmin Mezran took place last week. She is the daughter of Karim Mezran, a Libyan academic and senior fellow at the Washington, DC-based Rafik Hariri Center for the Middle East.

Social media posts also suggested that the wedding ceremony offered halal options for guests, which also surprised social media users, as Lowe had made numerous "pledges" to end halal slaughter in the UK, as part of his anti-Muslim campaign .

A repost on X by Karim Mezran, whose account is verified on the social networking site, also seemingly confirmed that his daughter's wedding to Lowe's son took place.

Lowe has commented on the marriage, but did not disclose the bride’s identity or background.

Instead, in a post on X on Monday, Lowe posted an image of the two, with the caption: "A young couple setting out on their life adventure. I am a very proud father." The New Arab could not verify the reports and has contacted Lowe’s office for comment.

In January this year, The Times newspaper published a list of births, marriages, and deaths of that month. The article read: "The engagement is announced between Angus, son of Mr and Mrs Rupert Lowe, and Yasmin, daughter of Mr Karim Mezran and Mrs Sheila Comes," pointing to a confirmation that the marriage was to occur.

The reported marriage has prompted ridicule on social media, with many opponents of Lowe mocking him for being a "hypocrite" due to his Islamophobic politics. It has also provoked anger from far-right accounts, who branded him a "traitor" of his far-right cause and his party.

Lowe, a banker and businessman who had served twice as chairman of Southampton Football Club, has been the MP for Great Yarmouth since 2024, having been elected as a Reform UK candidate .

In 2025, Lowe acrimoniously split from the Nigel Farage-led, right-wing populist party and went on to found Restore Britain, initially as a pressure group before it transitioned to a political party in February this year.

Restore Britain has been described as a more hard-right to far-right alternative to Reform UK, advocating for the deportation of individuals in the United Kingdom without legal status , the reinstatement of the death penalty, and a ban on halal and kosher slaughter.

It has gained support and endorsement from several far-right and ethnonationalist figures and groups in the UK, including convicted criminal and anti-Muslim activist Tommy Robinson . Elon Musk, the Tesla billionaire and now-owner of X, has also endorsed the party and helped amplify the Lowe and Restore Britain accounts on the social networking site, which have now amassed over one million followers combined.

On Restore Britain's website, Lowe says, "mass immigration, economic collapse, woke ideology, and the relentless creep of radical Islam – everywhere you look, this country is in decline, and has been for a long time."

The MP has regularly spewed Islamophobic, racist, and anti-immigrant rhetoric on X.

Lowe claims that Islam has a "growing influence" in the UK, and has made false claims about the "presence of political Islam" in the country, as well as "over 85 Sharia courts".

He also alleges that Islam receives "special privileges" in the UK.

He also pledged to end the halal and kosher slaughter of animals, and claimed that the practice is "cruel and brutal," but has failed to make comments on other methods of animal slaughter. Lowe has also taken aim at immigrants , pledging to deport foreign nationals "who can’t speak English," and those who allegedly "refuse to work and claim benefits".

In May last year, Lowe said illegal immigrants and asylum seekers should be "put in detention camps with minimal food" on islands off the coasts of England and Scotland and "let the midges do the rest of the work," triggering outrage from anti-racism campaigners.

The MP has also authored a 113-page policy paper titled "Mass deportations: Legitimacy, Legality, and Logistics" to justify his desire to deport people from the UK.

Lowe has also been accused of workplace mistreatment and bullying while part of Reform UK, which he called a "witch hunt".
