Kuwait, Qatar Connect Power Grids

KHOBAR - Kuwait and Qatar have synchronised their power networks as they move towards the launch of a four-nation Gulf grid, the Saudi state news agency SPA reported.

Saudi Arabia successfully conducted trial power transfers with Qatar and Kuwait, SPA reported citing Mohamed Al Shaikh, a maintenance manager at the Gulf Cooperation Council Interconnection Authority.

The full synchronisation of the grids of Bahrain, Qatar and Kuwait will take place on Wednesday, Al Shaikh said.

Gulf countries hope the $1.4 billion power connection project will help them meet rapidly rising power demand and avoid outages.

The United Arab Emirates was due to connect to the grid in 2011, and Oman also plans to join but has yet to say when.

Earlier this month, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar, the UAE and Bahrain signed a power trading agreement.
