20 hurt in fresh protests over rape, murder of IHK women

SRINAGAR: Twenty people were injured in Indian-held Kashmir (IHK) on Friday when police used batons and teargas to break up renewed protests over the alleged rape and murder of two Muslim women by soldiers, police said.

The incidents took place in Srinagar and northern Baramulla, as riot police used force to disperse hundreds of stone-throwing protesters who had defied a ban on public demonstrations.

"We have almost 20 people injured so far," a police official said, requesting not to be named. Three photojournalists were also hurt, he said.

Peaceful demonstrations were also held in other towns of the occupied valley, witnesses said.

The death of a 17-year-old girl and her 22-year-old sister-in-law had sparked widespread anti-India protests across IHK, after their bodies were found in a stream on May 30.
