Bossaso bomb explosion 13 wounded - reported

At least 13 people were wounded Sunday night after an explosion in Somalia's northern region of Puntland.

Seven police officers were wounded in the initial explosion, which security sources said originated from a hand grenade thrown at a police checkpoint.

Police gunfire in the aftermath wounded six civilians, all of whom are being treated at local hospitals in Bossaso, Puntland's commercial port city.

One police officer is reportedly in critical condition, although the wounded civilians sustained smaller injuries, according to medical sources.

Puntland police commanders said there is an ongoing investigation but admitted that there were no suspects.

Some unconfirmed reports suggested that the bomb belonged to the police officers and exploded accidentally.

Puntland is a relatively stable part of Somalia and has a functioning regional government.
