U.S. plans internationalizing Guantanamo prison

Washington is seeking to internationalize Guantanamo detention center in Cuba, a European official said Sunday.

But response from Europe has been negative, a report published by the United Press International said.

Saudi Arabia's semi-official Al Watan daily quoted a European security official as saying that the United States has discussed with European countries plans to turn Guantanamo prison in Cuba into "an international prison for terrorism."

The U.S. suggestion included referring the "dangerous suspects involved in terrorism or those who pose a security threat to these countries" to Guantanamo, according to the Saudi newspaper.

The official, who demanded anonymity, added that the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, would be supervised by international forces in accordance with a security agreement among the participating states.

The U.S. is considering sending detainees arrested in Iraq to Guantanamo prison, the official said.

But the American proposal did not receive the intended response from the European countries, which prefer that the Guantanamo prison be under the UN supervision if the U.S. wants to internationalize it.
