About 300 Muslim clerics from different parts of the world will meet in the holy city of Mecca next month to examine ways of strengthening unity among Muslims, organizers said.
The two-day gathering, scheduled for August 6, will discuss religious, cultural, legislative, security and economic aspects of unity, including forming an Islamic common market, said Abdullah al-Turki, secretary general of the Mecca-based Muslim World League.
The clerics will send their decisions and recommendations to a special summit of the 57-member Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), due to be held in December, Turki said in a statement.
The extraordinary Islamic summit, which will also take place in Mecca, was called for by Saudi Crown Prince and de facto ruler Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz early this year with the objective of healing rifts among Muslims.
