Blast targets Lebanon’s pro-Syrian Defense Minister

Lebanese Defense Minister Elias Murr was hurt in a huge blast that rocked a northern suburb of Beirut on Tuesday, wounding at least two people, Lebanese police said.

Live transmission from the blast scene showed Mr. Murr, who was covered in blood, being lifted out of his car by several rescue workers.

Witnesses said they saw black smoke billowed over the Antelias district, while emergency services rushed to the blast scene near a major highway.

Initial reports suggested that the explosion was mainly targeting the Pro-Syrian Defense Minister.

The mid-morning blast reverberated all over the Lebanese capital.

The police immediately sealed off the area, and kept journalists and members of the general public distanced from the scene of the blast.

Lebanon has witnessed a string of bomb attacks over the past few months, including a massive blast that killed the former Prime Minister Rafiq Al Hariri.
