SANA’A - The volume of trade exchanged between Yemen and the countries of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) reached last year YR 36.3 billion, including YR 28.1 billion of imports and 8.1 billion of exports.
According to initial statistics of the Central Statistics Organization, Egypt ranked first as Yemen imported products worth YR 15 billion against more than one billion rials in exports.
Somalia ranked second with a total volume of trade of YR 8.5 billion, and Djibouti weighed in at YR 4.3 billion.
Trade ties between Yemen and the COMESA countries have witnessed notable progress in recent times.
The Yemeni government is working to improve its economic relationship with the trade coalition in order to boost the national economy.
A study has been produced on African markets and how Yemeni products can meet their needs. The study said improvement could be made in the industrial infrastructure by setting up industrial zones, canning and freezing factories, and banks designated to fund exports.
COMESA, formed in 1994, now has 21 members: Ethiopia, Angola, Burundi, Djibouti, Zimbabwe, Comoros, Kenya, Rwanda, Malawi, Mauritius, Swaziland, Somali, Sudan, Uganda, Zambia, Namibia, Madagascar, Eritrea, Seychelles, Democratic Republic of Congo and Egypt. Its headquarters is in Lusaka, Zambia.
