The International Islamic Council for Da'wa and Relief (IICDR) has adopted a strategy to fight discrimination against Arabs and Muslims in western countries.

The action plan involves an annual report on the state of discrimination against Arabs, similar to that published annually on anti-semitic discrimination. The strategy was outlined during a meeting on Thursday by the grand Imam of the al-Azhar university, Al Azhar Muhammad Sayed Tantawi.

The IICDR, an NGO based in Cairo, also launched an appeal for a greater awareness of stereotypes and negative images regarding Islam and Muslims, present in text books of western nations and in Israel.

The director general of the IICDR, Tawfiq Al-Sharif, argued that most Westerners considered Islam a religion opposed to their civilisation, at times because of a distorted image presented by the mass media in their countries.
