UK Minister in Nairobi for Key Talks

Mr Chris Mullin, the British minister for Africa, arrived in Kenya yesterday.

Mr Mullin is expected to meet the President Abdulahi Yusuf Ahmed of Somalia and that country's House Speaker Sharif Hassan.

He will also meet other prominent Somalia leaders to discuss prospects for Somalia with members of the international community.

The official yesterday attended Kenyatta Day celebrations at State House, Nairobi.

In the evening, he dined with members of the British business and international donor communities.

Today, he is scheduled to meet staff at the British High Commission and inspect the visa operations conducted by Visa Handling Services at Westlands, Nairobi.

In the afternoon, he is expected to visit a horticultural company in Naivasha. High Commissioner Edward Clay will later host him to dinner, over which they will discuss economic issues.

Tomorrow, Mr Mullin is expected to hold discussions with a wide range of Government leaders, including President Kibaki and Vice-President Moody Awori, Foreign Affairs minister Ali Mwakwere, East African and Regional Cooperation minister John Koech and minister of State in the Vice-President's Office Linah Kilimo. He is also expected to meet the Director of the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission, Mr Justice Aaron Ringera, and the permanent secretary for Governance and Ethics, Mr John Githongo.

In the evening, he will make a presentation, under the U-Kenya programme, on the role of investigative journalism in democracy. Young journalists and media watchers have been invited to the event. Mr Mullin will depart on Saturday.
