Protest Against Police Terror in Britain

On Thursday 5 August 2004, South London-born Babar Ahmad was arrested by Anti-Terror officers acting upon an extradition request from the USA, incredulously alleging that he is responsible for planning attacks and laundering money to terrorists. Babar Ahmad, a law-abiding British citizen is a respected member of his local community.

Musleh Faradhi, President of the Islamic Forum Europe said “there are two things to consider with respect to Babar Ahmad’s re-arrest: one is the continued assertion of the US to act as an international judge, and the other is the overshadowing of the due process of Babar Ahmed against the Metropolitan Police Service.”

“The US has no claims on Babar. If he has committed any crime, the UK has a judicial system of its own. Besides, Guantanamo Bay and the like are hardly indicative of justice.”

Anti-Terror officers burst into Babar Ahmad’s house on December 2003 and brutally beat him, inflicting more than 50 – potentially life-threatening – injuries. The arresting officers also insulted Babar and his wife, including their Islamic faith. The officers forced Babar into sujud (prostration in prayer) position and shouted “Where is your god now?!” Following solitary confinement in jail and interrogation for 7 days, he was later released without charge. Had there been a shred of incriminating evidence it would have been found in the forensic searches of his property, in the intricate scans of his computers or in the raid of his workplace. And if that were not enough, then exhaustively sending samples of his DNA and fingerprints around the globe should have been more than adequate in securing some charge, but unsurprisingly – yet again – nothing was found. So from where arises the need to extradite this British citizen to a country infamous for its human rights abuses?

The Islamic Forum Europe backs a peaceful demonstration planned for Friday 13 August at 4pm in front of the Home Office, to protest against police terrorism against innocent people like Babar Ahmad.
