PSC Adopts Resolution on Somalia

The Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) last week adopted a resolution on Somalia.

The Council accepted in principle the deployment of an AU peace support mission in Somalia, based on its previous decisions and the commendations of the Nairobi Experts Meeting held in December 2004 to support the transitional federal institutions. In this regard, the Council welcomed the offer by Unganda to contribute troops to the African Mission to be deployed in Somalia.

In the meantime, the Council approved the establishment of an AU advance mission to be based in Nairobi that will ensure liason with the Transitional Federal Government, IGAD and other parties and undertake all necessary preparatory steps for the deployment of an AU peace support mission in Somalia as early as possible;

The Council requested the AU member states, the IGAD Partners Fourum, the European Union, the League of Arab States, the United Nations and the rest of the international community to provide the necessary support to ensure the effective implementation of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration as well as post-conflict reconstruction in Somalian.
